The Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights: What They Are and When to See Them
Both phenomena are caused by the Earth's position and the sun, but they are very different experiences.
The midnight sun
Above the Arctic Circle, the sun stays above the horizon for a period around the summer solstice because of the tilt of the Earth's axis. The further north you are, the longer this lasts.
The northern lights
The northern lights, or aurora borealis, occur when charged particles from the sun interact with the Earth's atmosphere. They are most often seen on dark, clear nights in autumn, winter and early spring. Activity varies, so there is no guarantee.
Tips
Check weather and aurora forecasts, find a dark place away from lights and dress warmly. Be patient.
